Intermittency in the large N - limit of a spherical shell model for turbulence

چکیده
A spherical shell model for turbulence, obtained by coupling N replicas of the Gledzer, Okhitani and Yamada shell model, is considered. Conservation of energy and of an helicity-like invariant is imposed in the inviscid limit. In the N → ∞ limit this model is analytically soluble and is remarkably similar to the random coupling model version of shell dynamics. We have studied numerically the convergence of the scaling exponents toward the value predicted by Kolmogorov theory (K41). We have found that the rate of convergence to the K41 solution is linear in 1/N. The restoring of Kolmogorov law has been related to the behaviour of the probability distribution functions of the instantaneous scaling exponent.

We study the propagation of localised disturbances in a turbulent, but momentarily quiescent shell model (an approximation of the Navier-Stokes equations on a set of exponentially spaced momentum shells). These disturbances represent bursts of turbulence travelling down the inertial range, which is thought to be responsible for the intermittency observed in turbulence. Starting from the GOY she...

The multiscaling properties of the mixed Obukhov-Novikov shell model of turbulence are investigated numerically and compared with those of the complex GOY model, mostly studied in the recent years. Two types of generic singular fluctuations are identified : first, self-similar solutions propagating from large to small scales and building up intermittency, second, complex time singularities inhi...
متن کاملShell Models for Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence
We review the main properties of shell models for magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. After a brief account on shell models with nearest neighbour interactions, the paper focuses on the most recent results concerning dynamical properties and intermittency of a model which is a generalization to MHD of the Gledzer-Yamada-Okhitani (GOY) model for hydrodynamic. Applications to astrophysical prob...
